From GP to lifestyle medicine: Dr. Taisia on transforming health

We’re thrilled to welcome Taisia to the Autonomy team! With her experience as a GP and her passion for lifestyle medicine, Taisia brings the perfect mix of medical expertise and proactive, personalised care.
We caught up with Taisia to learn more about her journey, her passions, and her vision for healthcare in New Zealand.
Quick Career Snapshot
“I trained at Otago Medical School and began my early years as a junior doctor in Wellington and Nelson. After completing the GP training scheme, I worked in rural communities across Motueka and Māpua, completed PRIME training in acute rural care, and later moved into full-time General Practice in Nelson and Wānaka. Alongside my GP work, I developed a private lifestyle medicine practice to tackle the root causes of health issues.”
Why lifestyle medicine?
“Frustration with the short GP consultation model—and seeing patients on multiple medications without real change—led me to explore lifestyle medicine.”
Discovering the strong evidence for nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management completely shifted my approach.
“Now, I combine evidence-based medicine with proactive lifestyle strategies to help people improve their health and prevent chronic disease.”
Passion areas
“Women’s health is my biggest passion, particularly perimenopause and menopause care."
I love helping women feel well during hormonal changes and reduce long-term health risks.
I also focus on metabolic health, gut health, and nutrition—helping clients achieve sustainable results, not quick fixes.”
Vision for healthcare in New Zealand
“I’d like to see a more proactive, preventative system.”
More time for primary care and better access to health coaching can improve outcomes and reduce costs.
“Change can start at the community level while we advocate for broader policy reform.”
“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.”
Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Life outside medicine
“As a mum of three, family life keeps me busy. I love snowboarding, mountain biking, cooking, and exploring the outdoors in Wānaka.
Growing up in a small rural mountain village near Nelson, staying connected to nature is a big part of my wellbeing.”
